Shri Patiya Wale Baba Ashram, widely known among pilgrims as Karah Dham, is one of the most revered spiritual destinations in the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh. Situated near Dhanela village along the national highway connecting Gwalior and Morena, the ashram stands in a region historically known for its rugged landscape and deep ravines. Over the past several decades, Karah Dham has transformed into a peaceful pilgrimage complex attracting thousands of devotees daily from across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The shrine honors Sant Maharaj Ratan Das Ji, who is affectionately called "Patia Wale Baba" by locals because he spent years seated atop a simple stone slab (patia) while performing intense meditation (tapasya).
The spiritual legacy of Patia Wale Baba is deeply embedded in the local culture of the Gwalior-Morena belt. According to historical accounts, Maharaj Ratan Das Ji led a life of extreme simplicity and selfless devotion to Lord Rama, serving nearby communities and bringing harmony to a region once troubled by conflict. Devotees believe that his divine influence remains present at the sacred stone slab where he meditated. Immediately adjacent to this holy patia, an uninterrupted devotional tradition has continued for over 50 years: a non-stop, 24-hour relay chanting of the "Sitaram" Ramdhun Kirtan. Teams of local priests and visiting devotees take turns chanting without a single pause day or night, creating a continuous devotional ambiance across the premises.
A distinguishing feature of Karah Dham is the historic "Shri Sitaram Lekhan Bank" operated inside the ashram complex. Unlike a conventional financial institution, this repository exclusively collects and archives handwritten notebooks filled with the chant "Ram Naam" written by devotees. Over the decades, millions of pilgrims from over 125 surrounding villages and neighboring districts in Rajasthan have deposited billions of handwritten Ram chants here. The ashram carefully stores these handwritten archives in dedicated vaults and periodically transports mini-truckloads of these spiritual deposits to the International Sita Ram Naam Lekhan Bank in Ayodhya.
Devotees also seek the ashram's sacred well water for spiritual and physical well-being. To manage large crowds safely, the central well has been covered and fitted with handpumps on four sides, enabling pilgrims to draw water for ritual bathing and purification. Local tradition holds that taking a dip in this holy water brings relief from chronic ailments and distress. Additionally, the ashram continues a daily tradition of hospitality, serving fresh prasad and meals to visiting pilgrims every morning and evening.
The annual highlight at Karah Dham is the famous "Siya-Piya Ka Mela," held every year between Magh Purnima and Falgun Navami. During this week-long fair, hundreds of thousands of devotees gather at the ashram for religious processions, cultural recitations, and massive community feasts (bhandaras) where traditional sweets like malpua and kheer are prepared in massive cauldrons.
